The target archery scene in Chesterfield County continues to grow, and our archery program offerings are constantly expanding. From youth archery clubs to adult and seniors classes, there's an archery program to suit just about everyone! Most programs take place on our new instructional archery range located directly next to Rockwood Nature Center (behind the campfire area). Single Courses: Take a class, learn archery skills!

Introduction to Archery
Excited about archery? Enjoy the fun of learning a new skill, from
stance to follow-through, focusing on form, safety and proper use of
equipment. Participants will learn the basics of shooting on compound
bows, which are adjustable to each individual’s draw length and skill
level. Class focuses on competition-style target archery and is taught
by USA Archery certified instructors. All courses take place on the
new instructional archery range next to Rockwood Nature Center.
Class held rain or shine - meet inside the classroom of the nature
center in the event of bad weather. Ages 8 and up, adults and
families welcome.

Adult Introduction to Archery
Have you always been interested in archery but don’t know how to
get started? Join our certified instructors and like-minded adults for an
introduction into the sport of archery. Learn range safety and get step
by step instructions on shooting and form. This program is designed for
those with little to no archery experience. All equipment is provided.
Program will be taught at the instructional archery range next to
Rockwood Nature Center. Meet inside nature center classroom in the
event of bad weather. For ages 18 and older.

Seniors Introduction to Archery
It's never too late to take up archery! Join certified instructors for a 
rewarding introduction to this classic sport with other seniors and
retirees. Classes will be taught with simple compound bows which are
adjustable to suit individuals of all strengths. Instructors will walk
participants through safety, rules, and step-by-step shooting instruction.
Participants will be required to walk over uneven ground and stand for
over an hour. Classes take place on the instructional range located
next to Rockwood Nature Center. Classes held rain or shine, in the
event of inclement weather instruction and shooting will take place
inside the nature center's classroom.

Beyond the Basics: Level 1 - Archery Form Development 
Formerly listed as "Intermediate Archery," this first step in a new
continuing series of classes will focus more on details of form and
body mechanics for those looking to continue their development as a
beginning to intermediate archer. Students work toward achieving
correct body alignment and muscle memory. Developing archers can try
both compound and recurve bows to experiment with different styles of
archery. All equipment is provided or you may use your own with instructor approval. Additional "Beyond the Basics" archery courses will be added to the series in coming seasons to create a progression of courses for archery development. Classes take place on the instructional range located directly
next to Rockwood Nature Center. Held rain or shine, in the event of
inclement weather instruction will take place inside the nature center's
classroom. Ages 8 and older, adults and families welcome. PREREQUISITE: Participants must have completed 
Chesterfield County Parks and Recreation’s Introduction to Archery course to be eligible for this program.

Introduction to 3D Target Shooting
Interested in bowhunting or just want to try your hand at a different style of archery? Join a USA Archery instructor and long time bowhunter for an introduction to shooting large foam animal targets. Learn about shot placement, range estimation, shooting around obsticles and shoot at a variety of targets in a natural setting. All equipement is provided or you may use your own with instructor approval. Class is held on the instructional range directly next to Rockwood Nature Center. Participants must have prior archery experience and/or taken one of the county's Intro to Archery classes. For ages 8 and older, adults and families welcome.

Adult Friday Night Fun Shoots
Archery is not just for kids! Join fellow adults for an evening of archery comraderie and friendly competition. After a brief safety review, participants will spend the evening unwinding from their week while practicing shooting at various distances and targets, playing shooting games and scoring contests. Come to one or all sessions, different games and targets will be set up every time. USA Archery instructors will be on hand to set up games and give shooting tips, however no formal instruction will take place. Previous experience with archery and/or taking a county Intro to Archery class is required. All equipment is provided or you may use your own with instructor approval. Shoots take place on the insturctional archery range located directly next to Rockwood Nature Center. Held rain or shine, in the event of inclement weather we will play inside the nature center's classroom. Minimum age is 18.

Beginning Bow Maintenance, Tuning, and Accessories
Have you recently bought a bow and want to learn how to maintain it? Do you have arrows that need repair, or are interested in helping your new bow and arrow set up shoot better? Maybe you are considering a bow purchase and are not sure what you are getting into. Join our arhcery instructors for this new class aimed at helping you become familiar with the equipment side of archery and how to keep your bow and arrows in good shooting shape. You will learn about the tools and basic techniques of bow maintenance and small repairs, what to look for in optimizing your bow and arrows accuracy, and the types of accessories you might be interested in purchasing as your archery skills increase. Course covers all types of bows - compound, recurve and traditional. Bring your bow, arrows and accessories if you have them, or use our county bows for hands on learning. Class is held inside the classroom at Rockwood Nature Center, no shooting will take place. Ages 14 and under must be accompanied by a participating adult.

Private Archery Coaching
For archers seeking to improve their shooting form, compete at a higher level, shoot in their first tournament, or overcome an issue, there is no better way to achieve your goals than working one-on-one with a coach. Rockwood Nature Center is home to several USA Archery certified coaches from Level 1 to one of the only Level 3 coaches in the central Virginia area. Group Archery Instruction - Scouts, Private Schools, Birthday Parties, Team Building and more!
Do you have a group that's interested in having their own archery class? Our USA Archery certified instructors can set up a class to meet your needs, whether is be an office get together, working on an archery scout badge, or a child's birthday party. After School Youth Archery Club
Does your child have the archery bug? Join the Chesterfield Star Shooters After School Archery Club! The Fall 2014 season registration is now underway for kids ages 8-16. During each class participants will learn techniques, form and rules for target archery, as well as try different types of bows (compound and recurves), shoot archery games and learn drills for becoming a better archer. Plus kids have the opportunity to earn a series of rank patches based on personal shooting scores to show off their new found abilities! Bows and equipment are provided, or you may use your own with instructor approval. At the end of the season the two sessions of the club combine to compete in a fun members-only tournament where kids can pit their skills against others in their age brackets to take home a trophy! New students with no archery experience are welcome, but must also register for the New Archer Introduction class below. Instructors are USA Archery certified. Cost includes equipment (if needed), patches, tournament medals and trophies. Two time slots are available but space is limited and the club is very popular, so register early to be assured a spot!

NEW Homeschool Archery Club

The homeschool archery club will follow the same format as the after school archery club, but at a time convenient to busy homeschool schedules. Each week, participants learn the safety, rules and techniques of target archery, shoot archery games and perform drills to become a better archer. Patches are awarded to kids to showcase their abilities and all members will have the chance to compete in an end of season tournament with the other archery club kids. See above for more details. No archery experience is necessary. All equipment is provided or you may use your own with instructor approval. For ages 8-16. Cost includes certified instructors, equipment, patches and trophies.

Junior Olympic Archery Development (JOAD) Club
The next step for youth archers who are experienced shooters and are serious about taking their archery to the next level, the Golden Arrow Archers JOAD club is a developmental program through USA Archery and open to youth ages 8-20. JOAD members work on mastering archery techniques and have the opportunity to earn JOAD star pins for their specific archery discipline (compound, recurve, barebow, indoor, outdoor, etc) through regular team shoots at their own pace. In addition, kids will be able to participate in the national JOAD Mail-In shoot each season and have the opportunity to travel to local, state, and regional JOAD and USA Archery tournaments if desired. 

Those interested should have a solid foundation in archery form and skills as well as own their own quality equipment. To be eligible to join the JOAD team, members must have completed at least two seasons of the Chesterfield Star Shooters After School Archery Club and be able to shoot at the "Master" level or higher for that club (they do not need to have earned the patch, only be able to qualify for it). Experienced archers who have not participated in the Star Shooters program may be allowed membership on a case by case basis, please contact the coach for more information. JOAD club registration includes any star pins earned and lanyard to hold them. Additional membership in USA Archery ( is highly recommended and required to compete in sanctioned tournaments, but not required to initially join the JOAD club. JOAD club meets at an off-site location a few miles from Rockwood Nature Center for most practices.

Archery Camp: Hot fun in the summer time!

Archery Summer Camp
Does your child wish they could eat, sleep and dream archery? Join our certified archery coaches and instructors for an exciting week focusing on all things archery. We'll start with and introductory session to familiarize kids with all types of bows and range rules, so no previous archery experience is needed. Throughout the week, kids will progress through more advanced techniques, drills, skill building, shooting games and shooting styles (ever heard of flight shooting or action archery?!?!). Participants will learn hands-on how to use and maintain archery equipment and accessories and will have the chance to make some of their own archery items to take home. Field trips to other Virginia shooting locations and some "down time" in nature and the outdoors when taking a break from shooting will be some of the other highlights of the week! All equipment is provided, or you may use your own with instructor approval. Camp meets at Rockwood Nature Center. Ages 10-13.
