Single Courses: Take a class, learn archery skills!

Unless otherwise noted, all classes take place on the group
instructional range located directly next to Rockwood Nature
Center. Class is held rain or shine. In the event of inclement weather
instruction and shooting will take place inside the nature center’s
classroom.

Introduction to Archery
Excited about archery? Enjoy the fun of learning a new skill, from
stance to follow through, focusing on beginning form, safety
and proper use of equipment. Participants will learn the basics
of archery on their choice of simple compound bows or recurve
bows. This class focuses on group-style target archery and is
taught by USA Archery certified instructors. All classes take
place on the group instructional range located directly next to
Rockwood Nature Center. Class is held rain or shine. In the event
of inclement weather, instruction and shooting will take place
inside the nature center’s classroom. For ages 8 and older, adults
and families welcome. $20/person

Adult Introduction to Archery
Have you always been interested in archery but didn’t know how
to get started? Join our USA Archery certified instructors for an
adults-only version of our popular Introduction to Archery course,
and learn the basics of this fun and rewarding sport. Learn rules,
safety and step-by-step shooting form for tournament style
target archery with our adjustable compound bows that suit
individuals of all strengths and draw lengths. Discover a new sport
that will give you a lifetime of enjoyment! All classes take place
on the instructional range located directly next to Rockwood
Nature Center. Class is held rain or shine. In the event of inclement
weather instruction and shooting will take place inside the nature
center’s classroom. Minimum age is 18. $20/person

Beyond the Basics: Level 1 - Archery Form Development
Learned the basics of archery and ready for more? This first step in a
series of continuing archery classes will focus on more details about form
and body mechanics for those looking to continue their development
from beginning to intermediate archer. Students may choose from
compound or recurve style bows as they work towards achieving correct
body alignment and muscle memory for target shooting. All classes take
place on the group instructional range located directly next to Rockwood
Nature Center. Class is held rain or shine. In the event of inclement
weather instruction and shooting will take place inside the nature
center’s classroom. For ages 8 and older, adults and families welcome.
PREREQUISITE: Participants must have completed Chesterfield County’s
“Introduction to Archery” course within the past year or participated in
an archery club in order to be eligible for this program.

Beyond the Basics: Level 2 – Aiming and Scoring
Take your new found archery skills to the next level with this second
class in the intermediate series of archery courses. Now that you have
developed good form, it’s time to work on your aim and learning how
to score a regulation target face. Participants will learn different aiming
techniques for barebow as well as how to use a basic target sight and the
importance of your sight picture. Play aiming games and end with a mini
scoring rounds to put your new found abilities to the test! Class is held on
the instructional archery range directly next to Rockwood Nature Center.
All equipment is provided, or use your own with instructor permission.
PREREQUISITE: Participants must have completed the Beyond the
Basics: Level 1 course within the past year or participated in an archery
club in order to be eligible for this program.

Adult Target Archery
Join fellow adult archers on our large outdoor target archery range
called “The Pit” located behind the Chesterfield Career and Technical
Center, 13900 Hull Street Road, for some weekly practice and archery
camaraderie. Archers must bring all their own equipment and know
how to use it, no formal lessons will be given during practice times, but
informal tips and coaching from instructors will be given as needed.
Distances can be shot from 15-70 meters, all targets and FITA-style
target faces will be provided.

Open Archery Range Practice Sessions  Come practice on our large outdoor FITA-style archery range on select Sundays with other archers. All ages, 8 and older, and all distances from 9 meters (10 yards) to 70 meters will be available. All bow styles welcome with 60 pound draw weight limit.

Archers must provide all of their own equipment and generally know how to use it. No formal instruction will be available. FITA-style target faces will be provided or
bring your own, if you prefer something else. Range is located behind
the football field at the Chesterfield Technical Center at 13900 Hull
Street Road. $10/per person per course.

Star Shooters Youth Archery Club
Does your child have the archery bug? Join the Star Shooters
Archery Club for an entire shooting season! This program for kids,
ages 8-16, meets weekly for eight weeks. It’s a great place for
kids to receive more in-depth archery instruction in a relaxed and
fun atmosphere with their peers. During each class, participants
will learn techniques, form and rules for target archery, as well
as try different types of bows (compound and recurves), shoot
archery games and perform drills to become a better archer. Twice
per season, kids will have the opportunity to earn rank patches
based on their personal shooting scores. Bows and equipment
are provided, or use your own with instructor approval. At the
end of the season, archers compete in a fun members-only
tournament where kids can pit their skills against others in their
age brackets to take home a trophy! New students with no archery
experience are welcome, but must register for the New Archery
Club Member Introduction class below. Instructors are USA Archery
certified. Cost includes equipment, patches, tournament medals
and trophies. This club meets at the instructional range next to
Rockwood Nature Center. Three time slots are available but space
is limited, so register early to be assured a spot!

Star Shooter New Archer Introduction
Required for all students new to archery who would like to
participate in the Star Shooters School Archery Club but did
not take the Introduction to Archery Course the previous year.
Participants must be enrolled in either course 31062, 31063, or
course 31064 to take this course. $10/person

Junior Olympic Archery Development (JOAD) Club
The next step for youth archers who are experienced shooters
and are serious about taking their archery to the next level, the
Golden Arrow Archers JOAD club is a developmental program
offered by Chesterfield County Parks and Recreation that uses
USA Archery curriculum and is open to youth, ages 8-20. To be
eligible to join the JOAD team, members must own their own
bow, have completed at least two seasons of the Chesterfield Star
Shooters After School Archery Club and be able to shoot a score of
55 points or higher in that club (exceptions can be made for those
with substantial archery experience outside of the Star Shooters
program, i.e. NASP, etc). JOAD club registration cost includes star
pins earned and a lanyard to hold them. Additional membership
in USA Archery (www.usaarchery.org) is highly recommended and
required to compete in most tournaments, but is not required to
initially participate in the JOAD program. $90/person.
