The target archery scene in Chesterfield County continues to grow, and our archery program offerings are constantly expanding. From youth archery clubs to adult and seniors classes, there's an archery program to suit just about everyone! Most programs take place on our new instructional archery range located directly next to Rockwood Nature Center (behind the campfire area). Park Archery League
Chesterfield County is excited to announce a brand new competitive style of archery coming in summer 2015, the Park Archery League! This Olympic style youth program will feature teams of five to seven youth archers, ages 10-18, shooting in head-to-head match play in singles and triples formats on weekends in June and July. Teams may be from any central Virginia area, the league is not limited to Chesterfield County archers. Cost is $50 per archer and includes a Park Archery League patch, approximately 8-10 matches, and end of season awards for top teams. Teams will practice at their own location and meet for games on weekends, schedule to be determined after all teams are registered. Teams needing a coach and/or practice space in Chesterfield County should indicate their need on the pre-registration form and a county coach and practice will be assigned to your team for an additional fee.

Single Courses: Take a class, learn archery skills!
Unless otherwise noted, all classes take place on the group
instructional range located directly next to Rockwood Nature

Introduction to Archery
Enjoy the fun of learning a new skill, from stance to follow through,
focusing on beginning form, safety, and proper use of equipment.
Participants will learn the basics of archery on simple compound bows
which are adjustable to each individual’s strength and draw length.
This class focuses on group tournament style target archery and is
taught by USA Archery certified instructors. For ages 8 and older,
adults and families welcome.

Adult Introduction to Archery
Learn rules, safety and step-by-step shooting form for tournamentstyle
target archery. Discover a new sport that will give you a lifetime
of enjoyment! Ages 18 and older.

What better way to unwind and kick off the weekend than heading to
the archery range after a long week of work? Archers must own their
equipment and know how to use it. No formal lessons will be given,
however informal tips and coaching from instructors will be available.
Distances can be shot from 9-60 meters. All bow styles are welcome.

Beyond the Basics: Level 1 – Archery Form Development
This is the first step in a series of continuing archery classes that
focus on the details of form and body mechanics for those looking to
continue their development as a beginning to intermediate archer.
Students may choose from compound or recurve style bows as
they work towards achieving correct body alignment and muscle
memory for target shooting. PREREQUISITE: Participants must have
completed Chesterfield County’s “Introduction to Archery” course
within the past year.

Beyond the Basics: Level 2 – Aiming and Scoring
Take your archery skills to the next level with this second class
in the beyond basics series. Participants will learn different
aiming techniques, as well as how to use a basic target sight and
the importance of your sight picture. Play some aiming games
and do some mini scoring to put your new abilities to the test!
PREREQUISITE: Participants must have completed Beyond the
Basics: Level 1 and/or the older Intermediate Archery course within
the past year, or participated in an archery club in order to be eligible
for this program.

Olympic Style Park Archery League NEW
Teams are now forming for a new, exciting archery league that will
feature head-to-head competition against neighboring archery teams
using Olympic style recurve bows. Equipment is provided or you may
use your own if it meets regulations. Archers must have some basic
archery experience. Practices will be held Thursday evenings, meets
will be on weekends. Meet schedule will be published once teams are

Star Shooters After School Archery Club
During each class, participants will learn the techniques, form and
rules for target archery. They also will try different types of bows
(compound and recurves), shoot archery games and perform drills
for becoming a better archer. Twice per season, children have
the opportunity to earn one in a series of rank patches based on
personal shooting scores. Bows and equipment are provided, or
use your own with instructor approval. At the end of the season,
archers compete in a fun, members-only tournament where
participants pit their skills against others in their age groups and
take home a trophy! New students with no archery experience are
welcome, but must also register for the New Archery Club Member
Introduction class below. Instructors are USA Archery certified.

participate in the Star Shooters School Archery Club that have not
taken the Introduction to Archery Course in the previous year).

Junior Olympic Archery Development (JOAD) Club
The next step for youth archers who are experienced shooters and
are serious about taking their archery to the next level, the JOAD
program is a developmental program offered by Chesterfield
County Parks and Recreation that utilizes USA Archery curriculum
and is open to youths ages 8-20. To be eligible to enroll in the
JOAD course, members must own their own bow, have completed
at least two seasons of the Chesterfield Star Shooters After
School Archery Club and be able to shoot at the “Expert” level
or higher. (They do not need to have earned the patch, only be
able to qualify for it.) The JOAD club program includes any star
pins earned and a lanyard to hold them. Additional membership
in USA Archery (www.usaarchery.org) is highly recommended
and required to compete in sanctioned tournaments, but not
required to register for the Chesterfield County JOAD program.

Archery Camp: Hot fun in the summer time!
Archery Camp - FULL
Has your child been bitten by the archery bug? Join our certified
NASP and ATA archery instructors for an exciting week focusing on all
things archery. We’ll start with an introductory session, so no previous
experience is needed and then progress through more advanced
programs and use different types of equipment as the week progresses.
We’ll also take some time to explore some of Virginia’s wild places.
