The target archery scene in Chesterfield County continues to grow, and our archery program offerings are constantly expanding. From youth archery clubs to adult and seniors classes, there's an archery program to suit just about everyone! Most programs take place on our new instructional archery range located directly next to Rockwood Nature Center (behind the campfire area). Single Courses: Take a class, learn archery skills!

Introduction to Archery
Excited about archery?! Enjoy the fun of learning a new skill, from
stance to follow through, focusing on beginning form, safety, and
proper use of equipment. Learn the basics of archery on simple
compound bows which are adjustable to each individual’s strength
and draw length. The class focuses on group tournament-style target
archery and is taught by USA Archery certified instructors. For ages 8
and older, adults and families welcome. $20/person

Adult Introduction to Archery
Learn the basics of this fun and rewarding sport, including rules,
safety and step by step shooting form for tournament-style target
archery with our adjustable compound bows that suit individuals of
all strengths and draw lengths. Unwind after work and discover a new
sport that will give you a lifetime of enjoyment! Minimum age is 18.

Beyond the Basics: Level 1 - Archery Form Development
Formally listed as “Intermediate Archery,” this class is the first step in
a new series of continuing archery classes that will focus on form and
body mechanics for those continuing their development as beginningintermediate
archers. Students may choose from compound or
recurve style bows as they focus on achieving correct body alignment
and muscle memory for target shooting. For ages 8 and older, adults
and families welcome. PREREQUISITE: Participants must have
completed Chesterfield County’s “Introduction to Archery” course
within the past year or participated in an archery club in order to be
eligible for this program. $20/person

Beyond the Basics: Level 2 – Aiming and Scoring
Learn different aiming techniques for barebow, as well as how to use
a basic target sight and the importance of your sight picture. Play
some aiming games and end the session with a mini scoring round to
put your new found abilities to the test! All equipment is provided, or
you may use your own with instructor permission. PREREQUISITE:
Participants must have completed the Beyond the Basics: Level 1
course and/or the older Intermediate Archery course within the past
year, or participated in an archery club in order to be eligible for this

Beginning Bow Maintenance, Tuning and Accessories Join our archery instructors for this new class aimed at helping you become familiar with the equipment side of archery and how to keep your set-up in good shooting shape. You will learn about the tools and techniques of basic maintenance and small repairs, what to look for in optimizing your bow and arrows for accuracy, and the types of accessories you might need as your archery skills increase. Class is held inside the classroom at Rockwood Nature Center, no shooting will take place. Ages 14 and under must be accompanied by a participating adult. Private Archery Coaching
For archers seeking to improve their shooting form, compete at a higher level, shoot in their first tournament, or overcome an issue, there is no better way to achieve your goals than working one-on-one with a coach. Rockwood Nature Center is home to several USA Archery certified coaches from Level 1 to one of the only Level 3 coaches in the central Virginia area. Weekly Clubs: Regular shooting for fun and practice!

After School Archery Club
During each class, participants will learn techniques, form and
rules for target archery, as well as try different types of bows
(compound and recurves), shoot archery games and perform drills
for becoming a better archer. Twice per season, kids will have
the opportunity to earn one of a series of rank patches based on
personal shooting scores to show off their new found abilities!
Bows and equipment are provided, or you may use your own with
instructor approval. At the end of the season, archers compete
in a fun members-only tournament where kids can pit their skills
against others in their age brackets to take home a trophy! New
students with no archery experience are welcome, but must
also register for the New Archery Club Member Introduction
class below. Instructors are USA Archery certified. Cost includes
equipment (if needed), patches, tournament medals and trophies.

Archery Club Introduction: For those that have not completed
an Introduction to Archery Course in the past year. Participants
must be registered for one of the archery club courses in order to

Homeschool Archery Club
The same format as the After-School Archery Club, but scheduled
at a convenient time for home schoolers and alternative-school
children. See the After School Archery Club description for more
details. Taught by certified USA Archery instructors, the cost
includes equipment, patches, tournament medals and trophies.

Junior Olympic Archery Development (JOAD)
The next step for youth archers who are experienced shooters and
are serious about taking their archery to the next level, JOAD is a
developmental program through USA Archery and open to youths ages
8-20. To be eligible to join JOAD, members must own their own bow,
have completed at least two seasons of the Chesterfield County After
School Archery Club and be able to shoot at the “Master” level for that
club (they do not need to have earned the patch, only be able to qualify
for it). JOAD registration cost includes any star pins earned and lanyard
to hold them. Additional membership in USA Archery (www.usaarchery.
org) is highly recommended and required to compete in sanctioned
tournaments, but not required to initially join JOAD.

Archery Camp: Hot fun in the summer time!

Archery Camp

Has your child been bitten by the archery bug? Join our certified
NASP and ATA archery instructors for an exciting week focusing on all
things archery. We’ll start with an introductory session, so no previous
experience is needed and then progress through more advanced
programs and use different types of equipment as the week progresses.
We’ll also take some time to explore some of Virginia’s wild places.
For ages 10-13.
